Audio Production

research + scripting |  recording | post-production | engineering

In audio storytelling, every sound — from a voice charged with emotion to the ringing of silence — sparks imagination and empathy in a way no other medium can.

I have produced work for The Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Arizona Republic, and other news organizations, creating stories that bring listeners to the heart of the moment.

Whether scripting narratives or designing soundscapes that speak without words, I focus on crafting stories that linger with audiences long after they’ve been heard.

Explore my portfolio below:

San Francisco Chronicle

As a producer of "Fifth & Mission," the newsroom's daily podcast, I handled virtual recordings, scripting, post-production and engineering in Adobe Audition, plus article creation and social promotion. Among other programs, I also helped launch and co-produced "Extra Spicy," which was named one of The Atlantic's 'Top 50 Podcasts of 2020' and won 'Best Podcast' from the Society for Features Journalism in 2022.

The Los Angeles Times

As an audio producer for "The Envelope," I pitched episode structure and prepared interview questions, oversaw virtual recordings via Riverside.FM, handled post-production in ProTools, and crafted copy for headlines, descriptions, and transcripts. I also contributed to the development of bonus episodes of the narrative show, "Foretold."

The Arizona Republic

I joined The Arizona Republic / USA Today Network's inaugural podcast team as an audio reporter and producer, producing weekly political show, 'The Gaggle" and helping to launch and co-produce "Valley 101," in addition to the development of special audio series. I worked on every stage of production — from ideation and scripting, to in-field recording and post-production.

FEATURED EPISODES

In addition to audio production and sound engineering, I’ve pitched, reported, scripted and narrated podcast episodes for Extra Spicy, The Chronicle’s food program, and Fifth & Mission, the daily news podcast.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all of these episodes were produced remotely, a feat accomplished through successful coordination with dedicated hosts, experts and guests.

Each episode examines the pandemic's impact from different perspectives: the unique challenges faced by San Francisco's Chinatown in the wake of COVID; the renewed debate over fair wages as restaurant workers became essential workers; and the experiences of the pandemic's most vulnerable community amid vaccine hesitancy and political polarization.

FEATURED EPISODE

In December 2023, following the passing of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, The Arizona Republic honored her legacy with a special audio feature that delved into her formative years on Lazy B Ranch, a sprawling 200,000-acre cattle ranch straddling Arizona and New Mexico. Recorded in 2018, the piece explored how ranch life shaped O'Connor's resilience and values.

While on the ranch, I oversaw the entire production process, from recording natural sound and interviews, to mixing and engineering the final narrative story. I also scripted the piece and worked with our host during recording sessions. The result was an immersive tribute that brought listeners into the heart of O’Connor’s upbringing and illuminated the values that shaped her groundbreaking career as the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Radio + Limited Series

In addition to production and sound engineering,  I have experience hosting and co-hosting podcasts and radio programs.

Here are some samples of that work:

In 2017, I hosted and reported for the first-ever podcast at Cronkite News/Arizona PBS, In Focus, reporting on social issues across the state.

Episode 1 features producer Ben Flores telling the story of a young woman with high-functioning autism.

Episode 2 explores how plans to defund Planned Parenthood could affect Arizonans, featuring my interviewing a reporter based in the Washington D.C. bureau. The episode, by Freesia DeNaples and myself, was a finalist in the Society of Professional Journalism’s 2017 Mark of Excellence Award for Radio News Reporting.

Episode 3 features reporter Brooke Ramos exploring how sleep deprivation affects young adults.

Episode 4 explores why depression is common in young adults & different ways it can be addressed, featuring my interview with Dr. Ole J. Thienhaus, the head of psychiatry at Banner Health in Tucson, AZ.

Episode 5 features producer Ben Flores reporting on the resources for Yuma families with a child who has autism. The episode was a finalist in the Society of Professional Journalism’s 2017 Mark of Excellence Award for Radio Feature.

Episode 6 features the challenges facing two sets of unhoused people in Arizona: pregnant women and the LGBTQ youth. In addition to hosting this piece, I interviewed Cronkite News Phoenix digital producer, Emily Balli.

Episode 7 explores the foster care system in Arizona and why some children choose to stay in the system even after turning 18.

Episode 8 and the final episode of season 1 features the stories of two Arizonans who grew up legally blind and the unique challenges they faced. The episode wraps with a round-table discussion with audio reporters/ producers led by myself.

In Spring 2015, I co-hosted "Buongiorno, Italia" on Arizona State University’s KASC 1330AM, introducing Italian news, culture, and music to an American audience. Each weekly episode highlighted current events in Italy, featured curated playlists of contemporary Italian artists, and included interviews with guests who had personal connections to the country.

In 2014, I worked as an intern community reporter for WGTD 91.1 FM, an affiliate of Wisconsin Public Radio's, "NPR News & Classical Music Network".

In July 2014, I co-hosted an episode of "Community Matters" featuring an interview with two of the youngest school board members in the Wisconsin Public School system, delving into their careers, hopes and concerns.
